8 May 2009

Thoughts on Wolverine:

I tend to keep personal statements off JL. However, given the less than stellar critical reaction to Wolverine, I'm going to exercise a rarely-optioned perk as site owner and make such a statement.

I finally saw Hugh's latest Monday.  Truth be told, I went in a bit leery.  Having intentionally denied myself spoilers, I was still well aware of the percentage of critics citing issues with the film.  And when that many critics slash a film, I often find, sadly, that I end up agreeing.

Before proceeding further, I should note that, amongst other things, I'm a writer and have been for many, many years.  And a film buff.  That is shared only by way of advising that I'm a harsh film critic frequently shaking my head at the dismal projects green-lighted in hopes of appealing to the 18-24 male demographic.  More often than not, I loathe what others deem "great."

To get my thumbs up, first and foremost, there has to be a well-written script.  Angst and a smattering of humor are key.  Acting should be stellar.  The cinematographer and director have to blend into an incredible team, shooting raw material that an equally-talented editorial team, at the director's behest, weaves into the magic that creates a great film.  The score needs to be memorable and, last but never least, when all the pieces are put together, the story must have heart.

For any who hesitated spending money on Wolverine, fear not.  In my opinion, this is a beautifully-executed action film.  Every key ingredient is there.  You'll leave the theater remembering the amazing characters you met, the high-caliber production values, and most of all, your heart will both care and ache for a mutant named Wolverine.

Seed Productions, and our Hugh, can be proud of this one.

2 April 2009

Wovlerine X-Men Origins: Wolverine News: Variety reports on the leak of an early version of the movie to the web. Robert Sanchez of IESB.net expressed a very strong reaction to the news. Other sites have announced their intention not to post any links or reviews.  We, at JL, also agree not to support anyone or any site  leaking illegal copies or reviews of Wolverine.  An artistic pursuit, of any variety, deserves to have the product of its creators respected.   We anxiously await Wolverine's premiere and will stand in block long lines like everyone else!

How would you like this movie to premiere in your hometown before the official May 1 release date? Zip on over to the movie site to find out how! Here's Hugh to tell you about the promotion. Hugh also appeared on On-Air with Ryan Seacrest; Hugh's segment is currently available from the main page. Keep up with the promotional schedule and merchandise release dates with Xmenfilms.net handy calendar; Hugh will be heading to Australia very soon. Ryan Reynolds talks briefly about the movie, and don't miss 7-Eleven's promotional Slurpee and Big Gulp cups.

In Other News: To benefit AIDS charity STAGE (Southland Theatre Artists Goodwill Event), last week's STAGE 25th anniversary auction offered a 3-hour set visit and lunch on the set of Hugh's next (as yet unannounced) film. Hugh has also donated a signed umbrella to the One Heart Umbrella Campaign (available for bidding through April 8).

[Thanks Patti, Zoobin, Janet, Pat P. Rustyalex, and Elizabeth!]

What's New With Hugh Archives

Can't find the headline you're looking for? The JL team archives the old news items every few weeks, depending on length, so keep checking our archived pages for stuff you may have missed. Just select the dates you want from the pull-down menu:

Please note: The original JL.com from July 2000 through February 2002 has been backed up, but it's in some disarray. Most of the photos and hard copies of text have been placed here by now, but we still have yet to sift through older articles, etc. We hope to have those online again eventually, so please bear with us. Thanks!

JOIN THE LIST!!!

Being offline, without warning, made us realize the importance of having an alternative way to notify visitors of major updates or unexpected changes. We've set up a Yahoo mailing list for site announcements. Don't worry, this is NOT a chat list. Traffic will be minimal with posts originating only from JL staff.  If you're interested, please visit:

(Psst--You'll need to establish a Yahoo ID if you haven't done so already. The ID's a  freebie!)
