Quote: "If you're at the National
Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney, all the casting people and the agents
come to see you three months into your courses, so you're always feeling
like you're on show. But because my school was so isolated you could work
out your own instincts, and creatively that can be a wonderful thing."

Thoughts on Wolverine:
I tend to keep personal statements off JL. However, given the
less than stellar critical reaction to Wolverine, I'm going to exercise
a rarely-optioned perk as site owner and make such a statement.
I finally saw Hugh's latest Monday. Truth be told, I went in a
bit leery. Having intentionally denied myself spoilers, I was still well
aware of the percentage of critics citing issues with the film. And when
that many critics slash a film, I often find, sadly, that I end up agreeing.
Before proceeding further, I should note that, amongst other things, I'm a
writer and have been for many, many years. And a film buff. That is
shared only by way of advising that I'm a harsh film critic frequently
shaking my head at the dismal projects green-lighted in hopes of appealing
to the 18-24 male demographic. More often than not, I loathe what others deem
"great."
To get my thumbs up, first and foremost, there has to be a
well-written script. Angst and a smattering of humor are key.
Acting should be stellar. The cinematographer and director have to
blend into an incredible team, shooting raw material that an
equally-talented editorial team, at the director's behest, weaves into the
magic that creates a great film. The score needs to be memorable and,
last but never least, when all the pieces are put together, the story must
have heart.
For any who hesitated spending money on Wolverine, fear not. In
my opinion, this is a beautifully-executed action film. Every key
ingredient is there. You'll leave the theater remembering the amazing
characters you met, the high-caliber production values, and most of all,
your heart will both care and ache for a mutant named Wolverine.
Seed Productions, and our Hugh, can be proud of this one.
